Vibe Coding Has a Failure Mode Nobody Warns You About
Vibe-coded MVPs ship fast and break at the worst moment. Here's what fails first and how to build smarter from day one.

The MVP Is Live. The Problem Is Already Inside It.
You shipped in six weeks. Cursor did a lot of the heavy lifting. The product works, users are signing up, and you have a demo that doesn't embarrass you. That is a real win and you should feel good about it.
But something is already broken. You just can't see it yet.
Vibe-coded products have a specific failure mode. It doesn't show up at launch. It shows up at the exact moment you can least afford it, usually during fundraising, a key hire, or your first client who asks for a SOC 2 report.
This isn't a criticism of AI-assisted development. It's a warning about a pattern we've watched repeat itself across multiple projects in the last 18 months.
What Actually Breaks First
The data model breaks first.
When you're prompting your way to a schema, you're optimizing for right now. The LLM gives you something that works for your current user story. It doesn't give you something that survives three pivots, a new pricing tier, or a multi-tenant requirement you didn't know you'd need.
We rebuilt a SaaS product earlier this year that had been running for eight months. The founding team had shipped fast, got their first 200 users, and then hit a wall trying to add team accounts. Their schema had hard-coded assumptions about single-user ownership baked into 60% of their queries. Refactoring it wasn't a weekend project. It was a six-week rebuild.
The second thing that breaks is the error surface. Vibe-coded apps tend to have thin error handling because the prompts that generate the happy path don't naturally generate the failure path. When something goes wrong in production, you get a generic 500, a confused user, and no useful log to debug from. That's fine when you have 50 users. It's a crisis when you have 5,000.
Why It Breaks at the Worst Moment
Here's the timing problem. Vibe-coded MVPs are fast enough that founders get to traction before the codebase becomes a liability. That's actually the trap.
You raise a pre-seed or a seed round. An investor's technical advisor does a two-hour review. They find no test coverage, no environment separation, hardcoded credentials in a config file that made it into git history, and a deployment process that is essentially one founder SSHing into a server.
None of that killed the product. But it killed the deal, or delayed it by three months while you scrambled to clean things up.
We've seen this specific scenario play out with founders who were otherwise ready to raise. The product was working. The metrics were real. The technical state of the codebase became the objection.
The same thing happens when you try to hire a senior engineer. A good senior developer will read a vibe-coded codebase and see exactly how much rework is ahead of them. Many will pass. The ones who take the job spend their first two months in cleanup mode instead of building features. That's expensive in salary, morale, and momentum.
The Junior Dev Problem Is Real
There's a deeper issue underneath this. A generation of early-stage developers learned to build primarily through AI autocomplete. They feel productive because they are productive, at first. But productivity without mental models is borrowed time.
When something breaks in a system they didn't fully design, they don't have the debugging instincts to trace it. They prompt their way toward a fix, which sometimes works and sometimes introduces a new issue three layers deeper. Without understanding how the pieces connect, performance problems look like mysteries, and architecture decisions get made by whoever wrote the most confident-sounding Stack Overflow answer in the training data.
This is reshaping how teams hire right now. Experienced engineering leads are asking candidates to debug a broken system, not just build a feature. They want to see the mental model, not just the output.
What to Do Instead
This is not an argument against moving fast. Speed is a real advantage and you should use it.
But there are three things worth doing even in a vibe-coded MVP that will save you enormous pain later.
First, get a senior technical review at the six-week mark, not the six-month mark. You don't need a full audit. You need someone with production experience to read your codebase for three hours and tell you what the two or three structural decisions are that will hurt you most at scale. Fix those before you add more features on top of them.
Second, write your data model like you already have ten times the users. Multi-tenancy, soft deletes, and audit trails are cheap to add at the beginning and expensive to retrofit. Spend one day thinking through the edge cases before you generate the schema.
Third, build your error handling before your first real user. Not after. Structured logs, meaningful error states, and alerting are not polish. They are the difference between an outage you catch in ten minutes and one that costs you a customer.
